Hawaiian Water Patrol

Think about going to elementary school directly across the street from the worlds most popular and dangerous surf break? On the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii, Sunset Beach Elementary School is that very school. SBES sits right across the street from Pipeline, one of the most famous waves in the world. A wave where surfers from every corner of the world come to test their talents and make a name for themselves. As much as Pipeline is known for its beauty and perfection, it is also known for being one of the most dangerous waves in the world, claiming more lives and injuries then any other wave. When surfing or swimming on the north shore, danger is always looming. This is what makes the Hawaiian Water Patrol one of the most respected and celebrated groups of people in all of Hawaii. HWP is the premier water safety team in the Hawaii. They provide water protection for many of the surfing events on the island, risking their lives to protect the contestants and beach goers. In addition, they provide intensive training for water safety teams around the world.

This year, students at Sunset Beach Elementary School welcomed a few members of the Hawaiian Water Patrol for an educational assembly. They told stories about the lives they saved, angry days on the ocean, and educated students on water safety. They even talked about sun safety and protecting your skin while out in the water, something they do every day
